Marlin 4 is a trail-worthy daily rider that suits everyday adventures, on and off the trail. It has a trail-savvy alloy frame with a suspension fork, 8-speed Shimano ESSA shifting, hydraulic disc brakes and mounts for a rack and kickstand, so it works just as well as a rugged commuter as it does on the singletrack.
Who it suits: first-time mountain bikers, riders after a tough and dependable everyday bike, and anyone who wants a real mountain bike without stepping up in price.

The Marlin 5 is where the Marlin range starts to feel like a proper mountain bike rather than a bike that can handle a trail. You get a 100mm suspension fork, hydraulic disc brakes, and Shimano's 9-speed CUES drivetrain with an 11-46 cassette, which is a wide enough range for anything in the Goulburn Valley.
It keeps the things that make a Marlin useful for real life: rack and kickstand mounts, internal routing for a dropper post if you upgrade later, and tyres at 2.4 inches that are happy on dirt and not punishing on the road.
Who it suits: a first serious mountain bike, or a rider who commutes during the week and rides trails on the weekend and wants one bike for both.

The Marlin 6 is the one we point people at when they have ridden a bit and know they will keep going. The frame geometry is slacker than the cheaper Marlins, which sounds like jargon and means the bike is calmer and easier to control when the trail points down.
Same useful everyday details as the rest of the range, rack and kickstand mounts and dropper routing, but with a better fork and a wider gear range than the 5.
Who it suits: riders stepping up from an entry level hardtail, or someone buying their first mountain bike who already knows they are going to ride it properly.

The Marlin 7 is the top of the Marlin range and the point where the parts stop being compromises. A RockShox fork rather than a budget coil unit, and SRAM NX Eagle at 12-speed with the range to get up anything.
If you are choosing between the 5, 6 and 7, the honest answer is that the fork is what you are paying for. It is the part you feel on every descent and the part that is most expensive to upgrade later.
Who it suits: riders who will ride real trails regularly, and anyone who would rather buy once.

Built for kids who want to get off the footpath and into the dirt. A light Alpha Silver aluminium frame, a 45 mm suspension fork to take the sting out of bumps, and an 8-speed twist shifter that is easy for small hands to work out. Rack and kickstand mounts are built in, so it doubles as a school bike.

The FX 3 is the quick one in the FX range. Aluminium frame with a carbon fork, which takes a surprising amount of buzz out of rough bitumen, and a 10-speed Shimano CUES drivetrain with hydraulic disc brakes.
It is flat bar, so you sit up and can see what is going on around you, but the geometry is closer to a road bike than a cruiser. That is what makes it feel fast.
Who it suits: commuters who want to get there quickly, riders coming back to cycling who do not want drop bars, and anyone riding rail trails.
